Swimming Pool Fencing

Pool inspections

It is the pool owner's responsibility to notify the council of the existence of a pool and to ensure a pool fencing officer has carried out appropriate inspections. There is a three year re-inspection cycle for swimming pools and inground spa pools, a five year re-inspection cycle for above ground/portable spa pools and a one year re-inspection cycle for multiplexes and schools.

Obtaining a building consent and passing related building inspections does not mean your obligations have been met under the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act.  A separate pool fencing inspection is required to ensure fencing compliance.

The New Zealand Standard NZS 8500:2600 - Safety Barriers and Fences Around Swimming Pools, Spas and Hot Tubs, is providing valuable guidance in enforcing the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 for both new and existing pools.

There is no inspection fee for the first visit and if the property is compliant a pool compliance certificate will be issued at no cost.

If the property is non-compliant and a re-inspection is required there is a fee of $90 per additional inspection.

If your pool has previously been exempted no re-inspection fee will apply for the first visit.
