Heritage Trust: New lease of life for Spring Street front door

Spring Street front door. Spring Street is one of those short, narrow streets off the Devonport waterfront, where cottages and villas from the late 1800s sit close to the footpath, retain their historic character and allow people today to appreciate the early development pattern of the area.

A North Shore Heritage Trust grant of $5000 has been used by the owners of 2 Spring Street towards the repair and restoration of their dilapidated front door and verandah. Just as useful as the financial assistance has been advice they have received about the front door's repair, and the type of glass that would be most appropriate for a building of this style and age.

Ewen William and Alexander Alison were the first owners of 2 Spring Street. Ewen Alison was a prominent Devonport solicitor, and Mayor, after whom a Devonport street was named.

The Alison family has had close ties with this community, and with Takapuna over the years. William George Tye, variously described as a Master Mariner or Captain, rented the house until at least 1895.
