Heritage Trust: Conservation Plan for All Saints Church, Birkenhead

All Saints Church, Birkenhead. The church building now known as All Saints Anglican Church on Hinemoa St, Birkenhead, started life across the street, and was originally constructed for use as the Forester's Hall.

Today, the church, which has been at the centre of many family events and community occasions in the Birkenhead area for about a century, is in need of extensive repair, and changes are needed to meet the needs of a new generation of parishioners. However, knowing what to do and how to do it in a way that respected and conserved the important heritage values of this protected building was a real concern.

The Heritage Trust's advice was that a Conservation Plan was the first thing that should be done, and provided the funds for this to be prepared. When completed, along with giving a brief history of the development of the church, and identifying the significant elements of the building, and their current condition, the Conservation Plan will prioritise the work that is needed, set out how it should occur, and provide an estimate of costs. With this information, the parish will be able to embark on work, confident that while making changes to the building for current and future needs, they will also be conserving what is important from the past.
