Heritage Trust: Former Birkenhead bakery restoration
|
A former bakery on Birkenhead’s Hinemoa St shed its ugly duckling status and regained its original charming character thanks to help from the North Shore Heritage Trust and the North Shore City Council. The trust, together with council advisors, gave valuable information about the original features of the building and financial assistance with the rebuilding project. This enabled the current owners to rebuild the original two-storey front verandah and recreate the building’s attractive original street frontage. The original verandah had been removed from the former bakery at 146 Hinemoa St many years ago, turning the building into something of an ugly duckling. The new verandah restores the building to its former glory, and enhances the heritage character of one of Birkenhead's important streets for the enjoyment of the whole community. The trust and council advisors worked with the owners to develop plans to replicate the original verandah, and gave them a grant of $15,000 towards the cost of the project. The work has vastly improved the street appeal of the building and preserved a piece of the city’s history. Photo gallery
