Dog ownership
|
For almost two years now, since 1 July 2006, all newly registered dogs had to be microchipped. If you haven't done this, amnesty is given to you now to register your dog before the 1st of July 2008. This will give you six months to have your dog microchipped and to advise council of the details. After the 1st July 2008 unregistered dogs will be impounded and may cost you in excess of $700 in infringements and costs. Register your dog before 1 July 2008 and the registration will cost you $70 - $100. Microchipping can cost as little as $35 using one of the following providers: Chip-A-Dog, mobile service - 021 213 2798 or other Veterinary Service providers across the North Shore like Northcote Vet Clinic, Pet & Vet (Milford), East Coast Bays Veterinary Clinic, Bayvet Veterinary clinic etc. If you require more information, please call Actionline on 09 486 8600. Are you ready to own a dog? Being a responsible owner means caring for your animal – ensuring it is registered, well-behaved and healthy. A dog which is desexed, properly trained, has sufficient companionship and exercise, and is securely fenced, is unlikely to become a problem – to its owner or anyone else. So before you buy that cute puppy, remember that owning a dog is a commitment and an expense – maybe for 15 years or more. Are you ready to be a responsible dog owner? Here is a simple checklist to help you prepare.
If you are thinking of getting a dog, consider adopting from the pound located in Waitakere City (Animal Welfare Waitakere) Phone 836 7777 or the SPCA 2567300. Dogs adopted from these agencies are desexed and the registration is paid at the time of adoption. |
