Residents encouraged to 'make the leap'
November 6, 2007
As the Northern Busway project nears completion, North Shore residents are being encouraged to 'get ready to make the leap'.
Watch out for billboards, newspaper ads, and a brochure in your letterbox that will explain the major improvements to North Shore bus services coming up in the new year.
The Northern Busway will officially open on February 2, and we will be celebrating with a huge party for all North Shore residents and bus users.
In the meantime, work is progressing well on the busway road (being built by Transit New Zealand), and on the three new busway stations (being built by North Shore City Council).
The busway is a two-way road just for buses, running alongside the Northern Motorway. The new stations - at Sunnynook, Smales Farm and Akoranga - have been designed with safety and convenience in mind.
Station buildings will be complete by the end of November, while the next couple of months will be spent adding the finishing touches, training bus drivers to use the busway, and testing all the systems to make sure everything is running smoothly for February.
We have launched a competition for intermediate students across the city to design a poster telling everyone about the busway and encouraging people to get on the bus. We will announce a winner later this month, and the winner's design will be used on bus shelter posters throughout the shore.
When the busway is open, North Shore City residents will have a system designed to make it easy and convenient to catch a bus from your neighbourhood to wherever you need to go on the North Shore and beyond.
You will even be able to transfer between buses using one ticket for all busway services, even across different operators.
