A new direction for stormwater management

Stormwater Strategy 2004 for North Shore City

This strategy, adopted in April 2004, is a working document which provides the direction for stormwater management in North Shore City. It will be reviewed to incorporate your feedback.

Objectives

  • Minimise harmful effects of overland flow and flooding.
  • Reduce sediment discharges into the environment.
  • Protect and enhance stream water quality and amenity.
  • Reduce the amount of water-borne contaminants getting into our estuaries and steams, and onto our beaches.
  • Ensure appropriate and effective stormwater management as far as practicable, taking into account long-term costs and sustainability.

Approach

  • Shift focus from the provision of stormwater pipes to the management of stormwater and its effects.
  • Prevent, rather than mitigate. Require stormwater mitigation to be included in new and re-developments rather than trying to solve the problems after the development has taken place.
  • Promote an integrated approach to stormwater management, between council and community.
  • Promote the use of sustainable solutions to stormwater management.
  • Clearly define responsibilities, ie. public or private.
  • Develop new policies and methods to assist in stormwater management.

Benefits

  • Helps to protect and enhance environment, and reduce nuisance caused by stormwater.
    Implications
  • Requires the development of new stormwater policies and methods. (see below).
