Effects from Private Works Policy
This draft policy refers to existing situations and defines our requirements with regard to stormwater effects, caused by private works, on neighbouring properties and the environment. It will be fully developed once cost implications and public views are known.
Objective
- Reduce the number of situations in which neighbouring properties or the environment are adversely affected by stormwater discharges resulting from private works.
Approach
- Develop a procedure for addressing stormwater problems resulting from private works.
- Inform the public of the consequences of their actions and of their responsibilities in avoiding any detrimental effects.
- Inspect private stormwater infrastructure for risk and consequence of failure.
Benefits
- Stormwater effects on neighbouring properties and the environment will be reduced.
- Property owners will be made more aware of their responsibilities in terms of discharging to, or receiving stormwater run-off from, neighbouring properties.
Implications
- Property owners who are causing damage to their neighbours’ properties or the environment will be required to rectify the situation.
- Some properties may have overland flow-paths re-established across them.
- Inspection may be required for certain on-site stormwater treatment devices.
