A new direction for stormwater management

Approved Stormwater Outfall Policy

This policy refers to new or re-development and deals with restrictions on the way in which stormwater can be disposed of from a property, due to a lack of capacity in the public stormwater system, severe stream erosion or the need to protect a sensitive stream.

Objective

  • Minimise the effects of stormwater run-off from new or re-development on other properties and the environment.

Approach

  • Require all new or re-development in identified areas to provide suitable on-site mitigation as part of the building consent process.

Benefits

  • Reduced risk of flooding or nuisance on existing properties from new development.
  • Reduced damage to the environment from new development.
  • Less ratepayers' money required to fix up problems caused by new development.

Implications

  • Affects anyone who carries out building work in identified areas (developments, re-developments, building extensions etc).
  • Properties in high-risk areas will have stormwater constraints noted on LIM's and PIM's.
  • Cost implications average $5,000 per site if/when development occurs, but could range between $1,000 and $20,000 depending on circumstances.
