There are five ferry wharves serving North Shore City at Devonport, Stanley Bay, Bayswater, Northcote and Birkenhead.

Ferries have great potential as a form of transport.

They are an efficient reliable, convenient and enjoyable way to travel, especially at peak travel hours.

North Shore City supports higher ferry usage but, currently, only small numbers of people use them compared to buses.

Ferry services in the Auckland region are run by Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and the new wharf terminals are also provided by ARTA. The adjacent facilities such as bus stops connecting to the ferry services, and car parks, are provided by North Shore City.

ARTA is planning to expand the service both in terms of numbers of ferries and new facilities such as the new Beach Haven wharf.

There are long range plans to build wharves at Browns Bay, and Takapuna, along with improved wharf facilities at Hobsonville, West harbour and Te Atatu in neighbouring Waitakere City.

ARTA is also (as of April 08) upgrading the Downtown Ferry Terminal in Auckland City, which is the hub of the Waitemata Harbour ferry service.

Existing and proposed ferry services around Waitemata Harbour and the East Coast Bays.
