Bus Priority Measures
- Supporting the bus network

The council has introduced bus priority measures to encourage more people to use public transport by helping buses move around the city quickly and easily; in particular by giving them a lane to themselves for fast travel during peak periods in the morning and evening.

The measures include:

  • Transit lanes for buses, car pools, cyclists and motorcycles
  • Improved local bus stations
  • More and better bus shelters
  • Priority space for buses at intersections
  • Bus phases at traffic lights to let buses move ahead of general traffic.

The bus priority measures support the Northern Busway, by assisting cross-city buses to travel along their routes as fast as possible, and then moving onto the Busway stations or the Busway road itself.

The measures have been introduced on many of the key roads in the city including:

Constellation Drive
Forrest Hill Road
Shakespeare Road
East Coast Road
Northcote Centre
Akoranga Drive

Other areas being considered for the introduction of bus lanes are the main routes through:

Browns Bay
Highbury
Milford
Glenfield

Bus Only lanes

These lanes can only be used by buses. In some, this applies only to certain times of the day, such as 6.30am to 9am or in the evening from 4pm to 6pm.

At other times all vehicles can use the lanes. Each lane is clearly signposted and the road surface may be painted green.

 Fines

Any driver who travels on a bus lane at times when only buses are allowed to use it can be fined $150.
