Transport and Roads

Lake Road is one of the busiest major roads in the city and the upgrade is improving the flow of traffic, making it safer for all users and providing more transport options, including better bus services.

Lake Road improvements

June 2008

The first stage of the Lake Road upgrade is now complete. It focused on improving the  intersection with Esmonde Rd.

The result is a much more efficient intersection with improved flow for traffic moving from Lake into Esmonde Road. It’s also safer for pedestrians.

This work has included:

  • undergrounding utilities such as power lines
  • widening the road to allow two traffic lanes, and a second left turn lane into Esmonde
  • new cycle and bus priority lanes
  • resurfacing with a smooth ‘hot mix’
  • new footpaths, street lights,  planting and landscaping, including a 'pocket park'.

We are now working on stage two of the upgrade, which takes place between Esmonde and Hauraki Corner, where there will be lane layout improvements, a dedicated cycle lane and right turn bays introduced.
