Wairau – Taharoto Rd corridor upgrade Wairau and Taharoto are both extremely busy roads and an important part of the city’s road network. But in recent years they have become congested at peak periods due to the increasing amount of traffic.
There were also concerns about pedestrian safety, so Council began a major upgrade in 2006. The Wairau – Taharoto project is one of the biggest upgrades underway in the city and is being carried out in stages. The project involves:
The first two stages have been completed. There has been extensive work at the Wairau / Taharoto / Shakespeare Rd intersection, where the three roads meet, and Shakespeare Rd has been widened to allow access to the Smales Farm Bus Station, which opened earlier this year. New bus and cycle lanes have been created, and there are also bigger, safer pedestrian islands for people crossing the roads on foot. The next stage involves the widening of Taharoto Rd between Shakespeare Rd and Shea Terrace, to provide an additional southbound general traffic lane and cycle lane, and a recessed bus bay.
This project is ongoing and there are more stages planned for the future. This is likely to include upgrading of the Forrest Hill Rd / Wairau Rd intersection, including the widening of the Wairau Creek bridge, and upgrading the Taharoto / Northcote intersection.
