Onewa Rd interchange upgrade - September 16, 2008

The new motorway on-ramps at the bottom of Onewa Road, Birkenhead are now open. They provide much improved access to the northern motorway for traffic heading across the Harbour Bridge to Auckland City, or beyond.

The on-ramp has one lane on the left for buses (which then move into the Busway lane) and a second one for other traffic. The road to the right of the picture behind the construction cones is the southbound off-ramp which is not yet complete. It will provide access to Onewa road from the motorway for vehicles coming from the north.

Meanwhile the council is continuing its widening of Onewa Road and extending the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane from Lake Road all the way down to Sylvan Avenue, with Stage II about to commence.

Better transport is a priority for the council and there is a comprehensive programme of work to tackle congestion, create a sustainable transport network, improve roads and provide more travel options.
