Lake Road Upgrade Stage 2: (Jutland Rd to Napier Ave)

Hauraki Corner

Option One

This option has low basalt stone planters. It takes up more space on the footpath but provides a larger barrier from the road, and can be used for seating and more planting.

Option Two

Option 2 is for a series of smaller plinths. These take up less footpath space, and have a more open feel, while providing excellent protection from the road.

Project Update May 2009

The Lake Rd Stage Two upgrade (Jutland Rd to Napier
Ave) will provide significant safety and traffic flow benefits for motorists, bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Our contractors from Fulton Hogan are now on site, safety fencing is up, and we’re underway with the enabling works along Lake Rd.

We aim to complete this part of the project before Christmas, with the road works contract scheduled to begin in early 2010 for completion late next year.

North Shore City Council and Fulton Hogan very much appreciate the cooperation and understanding of businesses, residents and commuters during this works period. We will make every effort to minimise inconvenience.

Give your opinion on the Hauraki Corner Plan.

North Shore City Council is using the road upgrade as an opportunity to also enhance the streetscape and introduce a safety feature in front of the Hauraki Corner shops.

This is partly in response to local feedback that a barrier between vehicles and pedestrians would make everyone feel safer, so we’ve looked at possible options.

Both options use bollards in areas where there is
not enough space to put in planters.

New Signalised Pedestrian Crossing

As part of the project, North Shore City Council and the Takapuna Community Board have resolved to locate a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Lake Rd just south of Harley Road.

This will provide a safe, convenient crossing point on Lake Road in between Esmonde Road and Hauraki Corner.

Thanks to local residents for their input.

Designs revealed for Corner Plaza

Of particular community interest is the creation of a plaza/urban park (see picture) on the corner of Lake and Jutland Rds (eastern side).

As indicated by these images, this peaceful space will feature appropriate planting and street furniture to provide a pleasant area for shoppers and locals.

Scheduled for completion late next year, the park will enhance this busy intersection and has been designed with easy maintenance in mind.

Background

Work began in March 2009 on the $8m upgrade to Lake Rd between Napier Ave and Jutland Rd – one of the busiest arterial roads in the Auckland region.

The project will continue through until late 2010 to provide significant safety and traffic flow benefits to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Features of the project

    • Improved safety for traffic turning out of side streets into Lake Rd, through use of the flush median and the introduction of strategically placed right-turn bans (into and out of Napier and Rewiti Avenue, and out of Hart Rd).

    • A safer journey for pedestrians, thanks to new footpaths and a signalised pedestrian crossing.

    • Two traffic lanes and one cycle lane in each direction, with each traffic lane increased to a safer width of three metres.

    • A new, continuous flush median to ensure turning traffic doesn’t hold up other motorists.

    • Indented bus bays to prevent public transport from holding up the flow of general traffic.

    • Undergrounding of power lines, improved stormwater infrastructure, new road surface, and landscaping features along the route.

Disruption kept to a minimum

During the initial ‘enabling’ works the Council and its contractor will minimise disruption to motorists by working mostly within the berm and footpath areas, not in the road. Residents and motorists will be kept informed at key stages throughout the project.

A new green space to look forward to

The Council has purchased land along the route, including property frontages and the restaurants on the eastern side of Hauraki Corner, to enable the improvements to be made.

The restaurants have been demolished to make way for the contractor’s worksite, which will be replaced by a new pocket park once the project is completed.

A two-part process

The Stage Two upgrade will be handled in two steps. From now until November the contractor will clear the site and establish new property boundaries.

Underground services will be relocated, including an upgrade to the water main servicing Devonport peninsula.

Then a second contract will be let to undertake the road works component of the job (scheduled for December 2009 to late 2010).

Questions and Answers

Why does this part of Lake Rd need to be upgraded?

The upgrade is essential to improve the route’s safety and efficiency.

About 39,000 vehicles travel along this stretch each day. The current narrow corridor width, poor condition of the road surface and limited safe turning opportunities lead to an unacceptably high number of turning and rear-end crashes.

If this is Stage Two, what was Stage One?

The Stage Two project follows the successful upgrade to the Esmonde Rd/Lake Rd intersection, and is part of a suite of major transport improvements to the wider area by North Shore City Council and New Zealand Transport Agency.
