Transport and Roads

An image of a road. Glenfield Road upgrade

July 2008

This upgrade is one of the council’s largest transport projects currently underway.

Glenfield Rd is the major arterial road serving the east of the city and as the population in the surrounding areas has grown, more and more vehicles are using the route. The current number is 30,000 per day and the figure’s rising by 3% each year.

As a result the road is now congested. The upgrade is needed to deal with that congestion, allow for greater capacity and improve traffic flow. We are adding a second lane in each direction in many parts of the road where there has been only one.

The council is also committed to expanding public transport and improving safety for all road users. All of these factors are being addressed in the upgrade.

Over a period of years the entire length of Glenfield Road is being progressively improved, starting from the intersection with Sunset Rd and eventually all the way down to the Birkenhead shopping centre.

The current work focuses on the area between Bentley Rd and Sunset Rd.

It is being carried out in stages and the first two have been completed. Stage three, at the Hogan/ Manuka Rd intersection, began six months ago and is due to be finished early next year.

Once it is complete there will be four lanes between James St (south) and the Glenfield shops. Previously, there were only two lanes along most of the stretch of the road. Stage four will involve works between James Street (south) and Sunset Rd.

The upgrade is creating a wider road surface that can carry more traffic with greater safety, better separation of the lanes, and some realignment.

In keeping with the council’s commitment to better bus services and alternative transport throughout the city, we are putting in new bus priority measures at intersections, and cycle lanes. There is also new landscaping and other design improvements to produce a more attractive “boulevard” feel.

In parts, flush medians (level with the road) have been put in to prevent turning vehicles blocking lanes, and in other parts the median strips are raised and planted with attractive trees and shrubs, including Kauri trees.

This not only separates the lanes of traffic for greater safety, but adds beauty to the road environment.
