Forrest Hill Road transit lane now complete 29 September 2008
Transit lanes speed up bus travel times and provide a dedicated lane for cars and other vehicles with three or more occupants, as well as motorcycles and taxis. The lane will help buses travelling to Akoranga bus station, which is part of the high speed Northern Busway. It has green and red T3 markings on the road surface and is well signposted. There is a new off-road cycle lane on the eastern side from East Coast Road to Tristram Ave and on the western side from Tristram Ave to Nile Road, which is shared with pedestrians. To increase safety for pupils at Westlake Boys High and Forrest Hill Primary School, there are new signalised pedestrian crossings outside the schools. Cyclists can still use the road but, for greater safety, inexperienced riders and children should use the footpath cycle lane. There is now a restriction on parking hours along the length of Forrest Hill Road, so it is important for drivers to be aware of where they can and cannot park. For example, they cannot park in a T3 lane between 6.30am and 9am. If they do they will be ticketed and towed. However they can park in this zone after 9am. Restricted parking areas are clearly signposted. The Forrest Hill Road project has been one of the council’s major transport upgrades and is one of many projects being undertaken to improve public transport, reduce car numbers and road congestion, and give people more travel options.
