Coastal protection

Castor BayWe are taking a consistent approach to coastal management and have put in place stronger safeguards to protect our city’s coastline. These controls are in response to increasing pressure from development and seek to protect the coast while allowing careful work on existing coastal properties to take place.

Coastal protection rules detail foreshore yards (the distance buildings must be set back from the shoreline) and the various widths around the city, and restrictions on development within these areas. Criteria and guidelines, rather than setting fixed widths, have been outlined for creating esplanade (shoreline) reserves when developing or subdividing.

There are strong controls on earthworks on coastal sites and resource consent is also required for fences over one metre in height next to the coast and for all new walls which protect against erosion.
