Waste Minimisation

Find out your rubbish dayBe part of a cleaner, sustainable future

We work closely with residents, schools, businesses and manufacturers, to make North Shore City a leader in waste minimisation. We were the first in New Zealand to introduce kerbside recycling and we continue to develop new initiatives to reach our ultimate goal of zero waste. Be part of a cleaner, sustainable future.

North Shore City Council adopted a Waste Minimisation Plan in 2005, the second for Council.  The plan identifies numerous activities that Council should be involved in to assist the residents in reaching the goal of Zero Waste. The plan provides the background to the waste issues in North Shore and provides the direction necessary for us to achieve significant milestones in Waste Avoidance and Minimisation.

The Waste Minimisation Team conducts work in many areas of waste minimisation and across many sectors of the community – these web pages will provide greater detail on the programmes operating and advice on how you too can work towards zero waste. Below is a list of some of the major programmes undertaken by the Waste Minimisation Team.

  • Create Your Own Eden – household organic waste recovery;
  • HazMobile – Hazardous waste collections;
  • WasteWise Schools – both a regional initiative and a local education programme;
  • WasteWise Business –a suite of programmes designed to assist businesses to minimise the waste they generate.
  • Be A Tidy Kiwi – litter mitigation campaign;
  • WasteWise Fund –this fund aims to support community and business waste minimisation projects.
