Pollution prevention

North Shore City Council recognises the importance of preserving and enhancing our environment. We have our own pollution prevention team that respond to pollution incidents in the city 24-hours, 7 days a week and also develops environmental education programmes specific to North Shore City.

When our pollution prevention team finds a problem it will work to:

  • stop the discharge immediately
  • ensure the pollutants are cleaned up
  • advise what to do to prevent the problem from recurring
  • educate about prevention pollution.

If necessary, the team can fine or prosecute people so that the city’s ratepayers do not bear the costs of someone else’s negligence.

Our team works closely with the Auckland Regional Council urban pollution prevention and response teams to promote better environmental practices in North Shore City. Our aim is to ensure that activities undertaken by our community do not harm our city’s environment.

Do you enjoy fishing or going to the beach?

North Shore City has over 140km of coastline with beautiful bays and beaches where we love to swim, fish and relax. Inland we have 171km of streams that are home to many species of plants and animals, including the endangered Kokopu (native trout).

Rainwater flows over land, into outside (stormwater) drains, then into our city’s streams, ultimately discharging onto our beaches or into Lake Pupuke. This water is slowly but surely being polluted by our activities, harming the creatures that depend on it and reducing our own use and enjoyment of the environment.

No one wants to swim at a polluted beach, so by taking positive steps towards reducing pollution you can help make a difference. North Shore City Council also helps protect the city from pollution by educating people and enforcing the law when necessary.

We all must help prevent water pollution.
