Sustainable Living

Home show exhibitionSustainable Living is about making small changes to the way we do things now to ensure we have quality of life and a healthy environment in the future.

It is about being aware of the longer-term impacts and the ethical implications of our every day decisions. It is about preserving our natural systems and conserving limited resources for our children and grandchildren.

North Shore City Council's Sustainable Living programme includes:

Sustainable Living at the home show

Every year we have a display at the North Shore Home and Garden Show usually held in February at the North Shore Events Centre.

Winner of Home Show Prize
We were delighted that one of the big winners was Henry Thompson, aged 12. His garden start-up kit included plants, compost, fruit trees, a worm farm and a garden seat.

Other prize winners included Chris Overy of Northcote, who has also been enjoying $250 worth of organic wine, and Ray Hewitt, who won $250 worth of vouchers from IE Produce.

In 2008 our interactive display shared some of the smart ways North Shore householders create a healthier environment. Visitors enjoyed the sanctuary of a lush native garden and gained inspiration from a small but productive fruit and vegetable patch.

Many people contributed their favourite tips for great North Shore gardens and collected new ones to take home. Children delved into worm farming and showed off their recycling skills with our recycling challenge. Visitors used a touchpoll to share their interests and opinions with us, and to enter the draw for some great prizes.

The Sustainable Living quick reference booklet gives a taste of some of the things we promote at the home show that will help you create a healthier home, save money on bills and improve the environment.
