Swimming pool health licenses

All North Shore City public swimming pools must be licensed and regularly checked against specific health standards.

The Ministry of Health and the Auckland Public Health Service have recommended that regular inspections of all public pools must be carried out by local authorities due to outbreaks of cryptosporidium in the Auckland region.

Cryptosporidiosis is an illness which occurs after the accidental swallowing of contaminated pool water. It is highly contagious and highly resistant to chlorine disinfection.

Having your public pool licensed means that the council will inspect and record water safety levels so that the necessary action can be taken to prevent outbreaks of cryptosporidium, and to maintain and monitor pool hygiene levels.

There are a total of 50 public pools in North Shore City and we aim to have all licensed by early summer 2007/2008.

Licensing will involve a fee of $160 which covers pool testing and inspection, education, and a certificate to display.

We will initially license council pools, school swimming pools and pools run by swim schools, then lastly pools operated by hotels and motels.
