North Shore Civil Defence volunteers and partners

NSCD training exercise - attending to disaster victimsVolunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation

There is no vast full-time Civil Defence force standing by in North Shore City, so volunteers are critical to our organisation. Civil Defence volunteers and partners help the injured, relieve personal suffering and help prevent loss of life in a disaster.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of North Shore City Civil Defence. We co-ordinate nearly 500 volunteers that help us prepare for disasters and support us during an emergency. All Civil Defence volunteers take part in specialist training, including exercises. Volunteers are grouped into specialty teams and are involved in five major areas of operation.

Information on volunteer training

Specialty teams

Initial Response Unit

This team specialises in light rescue work and provides immediate response to disasters. Among other areas, members train in first aid, search and rescue, driving and leadership, and work closely with helicopter crews and communications staff. The group is very active and meets weekly at North Shore Civil Defence.

Emergency Medical Unit (EMU)

Medically trained volunteers form the team responsible for a fully equipped medical unit, which is used to provide comprehensive medical care at the scene of an emergency. The team meets monthly at North Shore Civil Defence with a different medical topic each month.

Welfare Volunteers Team

The bulk of our volunteers make up eight specialist welfare teams that are responsible for co-ordinating and providing centralised assistance during a disaster, which are, in effect, one-stop-shops. While some member are trained in first aid, other members have specialist skills in working with people with disabilities, the elderly and very young. Volunteers train in their local areas plus monthly at the North Shore Civil Defence Emergency Operating Centre (EOC).

Communications

Communications is made up of two groups of volunteers that use specialised equipment to provide vital communications links with operational staff and other agencies during an emergency. Volunteers meet up to twice a week at the EOC and conduct weekly communications equipment checks.
