Summer’s a time for fun in the sun, and in the water. But it also has its dangers, particularly for children.
As usual we’re running the ‘Make it a Safe Summer’ campaign to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.
In North Shore City we are blessed with beautiful beaches, parks and reserves. Enjoy them, but be prepared. There are a number of things you can do to ensure you and your family have a safe summer:
Swimming
- Long Bay, Browns Bay, Mairangi Bay and Takapuna Beach are going to be patrolled again by surf lifesavers, as well as having a new tower on Milford beach. When you’re at the beach, swim between the flags. It’s the safest place to be. If there are no flags, swim with a friend and don’t get out of your depth.
- Wise up to the water … Supervise!
- Drowning is silent
- Fence your pool and cover the spa
- Designate a “water watcher”
- Learn CPR
- Enrol your kids in a water confidence programme
Boating
- Sober boats stay afloat. When you’re out on the water, wear a life jacket and leave the booze at home.
Driving
Summer street smarts.
- Drive to the conditions
- Watch your following distance & speed
- Look out for cyclists, kids, pedestrians & holiday makers
Save Driving this Summer!
Dogs
- Ask first before you pat. Dogs don’t like surprises and may bite. If the dog is alone, play it safe and stay away.
Graffiti
- Clean, safe and tag-free. People feel safer in communities that are free from rubbish and graffiti. So let’s keep North Shore City clean, safe and tag-free this summer.
Be a Tidy Kiwi
- Be safe. Be a tidy kiwi. People feel safer in communities that are free from litter. Please put your rubbish in a bin or take it home with you.
Our ‘Make it a Safe Summer’ partners include Surf Life Saving Northern Region, the NZ Police, ACC, WaterSafe Auckland, ShoreSafe and Maritime New Zealand.
We are also grateful again for the support of North Shore Toyota. For more information, please check out the links page (see the right-hand menu).
