Cemeteries and crematorium
| O'Neill's Point Cemetery O'Neill's Point Cemetery is in Bayswater Ave, Bayswater. It is open 365 days a year from 6am to 8pm during daylight savings, and from 6am to 6pm during winter. Interments may still be carried out in existing plots at the cemetery. HistoryThe land at O'Neill's Point Cemetery was bought from the O'Neill's family in June, 1880. North Shore City's oldest cemetery, which opened in August, 1891, was designed by John Boyland and was originally divided into three areas - unsectarian, Anglican and Roman Catholic. The three areas are no longer defined in any way, and over the years plots have been created in any space available, which can make it difficult to find some gravesites. O'Neill's Point Cemetery was transferred to the City of Takapuna in November 1971, and is consequently now administered by North Shore City. Interments of interest An interment of interest is that of Leocardia De Oliveira. Local man Edward Gibbon Wakefield adopted her after his 17-year-old daughter Susan died. Miss De Oliveira arrived in Wellington on the ship Adelaide in March 1840. On board she met her future husband, James John Taine, and they were married later that same year. E W Alison was also interred at the cemetery, in 1945. He was the founder of the Devonport Steam Ferry Co, after starting work in a printing office, and then going into business with his brother as a butcher. Mr Alison was elected to the Waitemata County Council when he was only 23, and was there for nine years. He was Mayor of Devonport from 1890 to 1894, and from 1902 to 1905, and was a Member of Parliament from 1902 to 1908.
