Cemeteries and crematorium

North Shore Memorial Park

North Shore Memorial Park Cemetery and Crematorium is at Schnapper Rock Rd, Albany. It is open 365 days a year from 6am to 8pm during daylight savings, and from 6am to 6pm during winter. The cemetery is open and interments can be carried out.

North Shore Memorial Park is set in beautifully landscaped grounds with rolling grassy slopes leading to picturesque Lucas Creek. The park is a tranquil retreat and the site of one of the largest cemeteries in the Auckland region.

The 90 acre Memorial Park is located at 235 Schnapper Rock Road in Albany. The park grounds are maintained to the highest of standards, and on-going plantings and improvements ensure a continuation of the park’s peaceful nature.

Council owned and operated

Opened in 1974, the crematorium, chapel and grounds are owned and operated by the North Shore City Council.

Cemetery and crematorium staff, along with your funeral director, can be relied on to handle arrangements for burial or cremation with professional care and understanding.

Personally selected music can be played during the service by arrangement with the funeral director. Organ music is also available.

Special areas of the Memorial Park have been established for different burial, cremation and memorial options. Contact the Memorial Park staff (see details below) or your funeral director for more information.

History

In 1970 each of the borough councils in what is now North Shore City agreed to pay their share of the cost of North Shore Cemetery and Crematorium in Albany. Tenders for the first stage of what is now called North Shore Memorial Park Cemetery and Crematorium were called for in November, 1971.

Hold ups because some of the borough councils refused to pay their share of other upgrades associated with the $442,000 first stage meant that the building and landscaping did not begin until late in 1972.

North Shore Memorial Park and Crematorium was dedicated by the Anglican Bishop of Auckland in January 1974. Prayers were also offered by Reverend Beere from North Shore Presbytery and Reverend Sprackett of the Auckland Council of Churches.

The first interment at North Shore Memorial Park and Crematorium took place later that month, and the first cremation in March.
