Water Services Customer Charter

The Water Services Customer Charter clearly outlines the obligations, rights and responsibilities of North Shore City Council and our customers, in one document.

These rights and responsibilities arise from statutes and council bylaws. The charter brings them together in one document so that the positions of both customers and North Shore City can be easily understood.

You can also call Actionline on 486 8600 for a copy to be posted to you. We have outlined below some of the key points relating to wastewater service.

Key wastewater points in the customer charter:

Gully trap must prevent stormwaterStormwater entry

It is illegal to drain stormwater into the wastewater network. You must ensure that your private wastewater drains are well maintained and that stormwater does not enter through the gully trap.

Your sewage drains should look like the example in the diagram (right).

Building near public sewers

There are special rules and procedures for building near public sewers to protect our existing sewers from damage and ensure that access is maintained for maintenance and renewal.

If you are planning to build or carry out alterations to your property (including retaining walls), that are within five metres of a local sewer or 10 metres of a trunk sewer you need to read our 'Building near public sewers' brochure.

Fixing our public and private sewersFixing private sewers

As part of Project CARE, our long-term project to improve beach water quality by upgrading the performance of the wastewater network, we are inspecting both the private and public sewers in various areas throughout North Shore City.

We will work on fixing the public sewers, but as a property owner you’re responsible for fixing any problems with your private sewers.

Trade waste

Trade waste is the liquid waste that comes from commercial and industrial premises through the sewerage network and is treated at our wastewater (sewage) treatment plant at Rosedale. The Trade Waste Bylaw outlines the way trade waste is managed and charges are levied in North Shore City.
