The offshore section of the new outfall
A 2.8km ocean outfall will be built to transport up to six cubic metres per second of treated effluent into the Rangitoto Channel.
The outfall will consist of a buried pipeline running from the Mairangi Bay reserve under the beach and seabed to approximately 2.8km offshore where the water is approximately 12m deep. A series of diffusers will rise vertically along the last 160m of the pipeline to disperse the effluent into the sea.
We have undertaken investigations of the offshore section of the outfall to determine how the discharge from the new outfall will dilute and disperse into the Hauraki Gulf. Sea currents at this location will ensure the effluent will be rapidly diluted and dispersed, to ensure minimal effect on the environment.
The new outfall replaces the existing outfall which discharges 600m off Red Bluff. The existing outfall has a limited future capacity of only 1m3 per second and is deteriorating with age.
Council is exploring options to reconfigure the existing outfall into an artificial reef for recreational purposes following its decommissioning after 2010.
