Wastewater: Mr Greaseball - fat, oil and grease block drains

Have you ever wondered what happens to the fat, oil and grease that goes down our drains rather than in the rubbish?

It is estimated that more than 4,000 kg per day ends up at the wastewater treatment plant and adds to the heavy cost of treating our wastewater.

Fat, oil and grease also blocks drains and causes sewage overflows.

Often fat, oil and grease goes down the plughole as a hot liquid. As it cools, it solidifies and can catch on tree roots and rough surfaces in our pipes, gradually causing blockages.

Every year we have to deal with approximately 550 blocked drains (that’s more than 10 a week) and more than one in every five of these is due to fat, oil and grease.

Mr Greaseball is our way of reminding you to – avoid pouring fat, oil and grease down the drain.

  • Scrape plates into the bin before washing.

  • Your sink waste disposal isn't a rubbish bin.

Blocked drains cause wastewater overflows, which pollute our
streams and beaches. Help us improve beach water quality
