Project CARE: reducing stormwater impact

Regulatory and management changes

With the realisation of the long-term damage to the environment caused by stormwater, we intend to take more notice of its impacts and make regulatory and management changes as a result.

Growth in the city will mean more housing, more people, more run-off from roofs and driveways, and more pollution from vehicles and other sources. We need to find a sustainable solution for dealing with stormwater by developing an integrated approach.

Our adopted Stormwater Strategy 2004 will bring about major changes to the management of stormwater in the city. It focuses on reducing stormwater run-off and slowing it down, rather than putting in more pipes. In particular, there would be better stormwater controls for new developments in greenfield areas and for redevelopment in existing urban areas.

We’ll consider retrofitting stormwater management solutions where there are significant and measurable benefits.
