Streamside planting to begin in earnest

As part of our stormwater strategy we will be undertaking a number of major streamside planting projects across the city over the next ten years.

Planting next to waterways provides shade and foodto encourage aquatic life; provides a barrier to catch pollutants that may enter streams; reduces damage caused by flooding; and enhances the visual appeal of the environment.

With assistance from the Albany Community Board, over 2,000 native plants have already been planted along the banks of the Oteha Valley Stream. Implementing moreof these types of projects will significantly increase the demand for native plants.

To ensure that we can obtain quality plants and thenumbers we need, we are in the process of establishinglong term contracts for the propagation, supply, plantingand maintenance of native plants.
