Birkdale trunk sewer upgrade

North Shore City Council has begun construction work on the first stage (Area A) of the trunk sewer upgrade that runs between Highbury and Beach Haven.

Work is currently ongoing in the Lauderdale Rd and Eskdale Reserve area.

The 4.5km existing main sewer from Highbury to Beach Haven serves a population of 10,000
people.

It has reached capacity and there are an unacceptable number of sewage overflows into the Eskdale Stream (more than 30 per year). The sewer is 45 years old and has inadequate size capacity to serve the existing population. The Birkdale trunk sewer upgrade is a continuation of Project CARE, our programme to meet the community’s expectations to improve beach and stream water quality.
