Disposing of stormwater safely
It can cause flooding, erosion and pollution, which can have significant effects on property, the ecology of our water environments and public health. Both the council and homeowners have responsibilities to ensure stormwater is disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. While we provide a system of pipes, channels and overland flow paths, you are responsible for managing stormwater on your property. If you are undertaking construction or maintenance work, or altering or diverting stormwater pipes on your property you must obtain the appropriate consents and comply with the stormwater bylaws. Connections to the public stormwater system that do not have the appropriate approvals are illegal. This includes stormwater being piped into the wastewater network and low gully traps that allow stormwater to flow into the sewerage system. Please remember that streams are part of the stormwater system too. Do not leave loose materials on stream banks – in heavy rain they could be washed away and cause blockages further downstream.
