Maintaining our ‘Aa’ water supply grading

We aim to provide safe, high quality drinking water to our customers at all times. Currently our water supply has an ‘Aa’ grading from the Ministry of Health, and we are committed to maintaining this.

However, occasionally a drop in water pressure resulting from activities on private property may cause water to flow back into the public pipeline. This is known as ‘backflow’ and has the potential to contaminate the water supply and affect public health.
A number of simple backflow devices are available to ensure that water can only pass through a pipeline in one direction.

Backflow devices are usually required on residential properties that have water pumps and/or rain tanks connected to household plumbing; swimming pools and garden irrigation systems.

On commercial properties a backflow device is required where activities have the potential to cause sickness or endanger health e.g. hospitals and mortuaries, funeral parlours, laundries, hair salons and restaurants with commercial dishwashers.

Backflow prevention is a requirement of the Building Act 1991, the Water Supplies Protection Act 1991 and to obtain a Building Warrant of Fitness – we are stepping up our efforts to ensure these legal requirements have been complied with.

If you are unsure whether your property requires a backflow device; or want advice on the type of backflow device to install; or have concerns about ‘water-related’ activities on another property call Actionline on 486 8600 and help us maintain the high quality water supply we currently enjoy.
