Great news! Cycling on the North Shore is continuing to grow in popularity as more people swap cars for bikes and get moving.
In the most recent traffic counts, the number of cyclists counted had increased at 10 of the 13 sites monitored. The highest number of cyclists counted was on Lake Rd, near Takapuna Grammar School, with a total of 327 cyclists recorded. The most notable increase was at the Rosedale / Bush Rd intersection in Albany; up an impressive 51 percent.
Travel monitoring at North Shore schools has revealed that Belmont Intermediate School has more students cycling to school that any other school in Auckland and probably in the whole of New Zealand. Nearly half the students get there by bike, slashing the number of cars that might otherwise be on the school run.
