Burger King NZ Breakers encourage North Shore kids to 'slam dunk their junk'
The North Shore City Council and Burger King NZ Breakers have teamed up to encourage North Shore students to be tidy Kiwis and “slam dunk their junk”.
The new initiative aims to help raise awareness of what children should be doing to reduce litter and minimise waste in their schools and communities.
Students are asked to prepare and perform two minute jingles incorporating the “Be a tidy Kiwi” message and the “reduce, reuse and recycle” tagline.
Burger King NZ Breakers players then run the students through a series of fun activities and games such as the recycling bin shoot-out and the Waste Whiz quiz, finishing with a five on five basketball game.
The Council’s Waste Prevention Officer, Melanie Buchanan says it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to work with the NZ Breakers, and the Council hopes the message will really hit home for kids that it’s “cool” to be a tidy Kiwi.
“We’re always looking for ways to reach primary and intermediate school students to deliver our anti-littering, waste reduction and responsible waste disposal messages. The Burger King NZ Breakers were identified as a great organisation to team up with because of the significant work they do with school children and in the North Shore community in general.
“Children learning about waste prevention and minimisation at an early age can only be a good thing for the future of our communities, and it’s great that the NZ Breakers get behind such a worthy cause.
“The kids just love being up close to the players and really listen to what they have to say. It’s good to see that the players are using the influence of sport to strengthen local communities and to help educate our local kids,” says Ms Buchanan.
