
North Shore schools have been playing their part in reducing, reusing and recycling their waste. Many schools encourage their students, staff and community to become more waste wise with their rubbish.
Current waste reduction activities occurring in local schools:
- waste audits
- developing waste wise action plans
- composting
- worm farming
- litter free days
- litter free lunch boxes
- selling vermicasts and worm tea to help with fundraising
- paper and cardboard recycling
- purchasing policies
- investigating ways to reduce packaging
What is waste and why do we need to reduce it?

Waste is something that we do not have a use for anymore – a resource that we throw away. Currently, the Auckland region generates enough rubbish to fill a rugby field,10 storeys high in just one month. All of this goes to landfill, exposing our air and waterways to pollution. Young people need to gain awareness to the unpleasant effects on the environment of excess waste disposal and the long-term costs to future generations.
