Did you know that rubbish is a big problem?
We produce a lot of rubbish each day by buying things and then throwing them away when we don’t need them anymore.
Our rubbish goes to a landfill, which is a big hole dug in the ground. Landfills can be smelly, dirty and cause environmental problems.
By reducing, reusing and recycling the things we buy, there is less rubbish going to the landfill.
Sort It! is the recycling game that gauges how much you know about where your rubbish should go!
This educational resource for children, teachers and parents is based on North Shore City Council’s rubbish and recycling collections. Sort It! was named by Denzil Whitcombe of Verran Primary School.
Instructions:
- When in the game, click on one for the four rooms as seen below
- There are five items in each room. Click on an item and drag to where you think it should go
- You only get five tries in each room and you cannot do the same room twice
- There are clues you can use along with way to help you
- You will get a certificate to print out if you put all of the items in the four rooms in the right place. Otherwise, you can try the game again

Background
Sort It! was developed as an interactive approach to educating people about how to properly dispose of rubbish. We felt it was time that learning about rubbish was made fun and easy!
Fraser Williamson, a local Devonport artist, designed most of the graphics and illustrations for the game. Fraser is one of New Zealand’s most popular children’s books illustrators and regularly appears at events such as Storylines and other literary festivals. He has worked with notable authors such as Joy Cowley and with many of the best writers in the country. Fraser has an instantly recognisable style that has been described as ‘funky’ and ‘quirky’. One of the most recognisable packaging projects that has born his stamp is the Anchor milk brand.
The game was developed by new media web designer Keryn Christiansen, contractor Rachel Callender and Jenni Drummond. The waste minimisation team at NSCC provided technical advice and assistance.
