Public place recycling bins coming to Takapuna, Devonport and Narrow Neck.
Nine purpose-built public place recycling bins are now in Takapuna, Devonport and Narrow Neck so that you can recycle your empty drink bottles and cans on the go.
The new recycling bins are part of a Ministry for the Environment-funded trial that starts in July 2009 and runs to June 2010 to study how well people will utilise recycling bins in public places.
By June 2010, there will be 600 recycling bins in place across New Zealand.
The stainless steel bins are easily recognisable by the green ‘Love NZ’ logo.
The new bins will accept all the same materials as your home recycling bin (glass bottles and jars, plastic containers 1-7, steel, tin and aluminium cans). Paper and cardboard will not be accepted because of the risk of food contamination and neither will plastic bags and polystyrene.
The content of the recycling bins will be mechanically sorted at the Waitakere transfer station, which also processes the city’s kerbside collected recyclable material.
The council is trialling this scheme to encourage the public to recycle when they are away from home, and to send a good signal to visitors and tourists about the importance of looking after our environment.
