Waste collection services for businesses
North Shore City Council provides collection services for rubbish, recycling, paper and cardboard to businesses in the North Shore area.
Rubbish, paper and cardboard, and recycling are all collected from the kerb.
Please refer to the business collection days page for information on when you should put your commercial rubbish and recycling out.
Business rubbish collections
Business rubbish is only collected if it is in an official prepaid rubbish bag. The orange 40 and 60 litre bags can be purchased from supermarkets, dairies and major service stations. The price of the bag covers the cost of collection and disposal of your rubbish.
Getting your rubbish ‘right’:
- Tie your rubbish bags up securely
- Keep rubbish bags to a reasonable weight (10kg for 40 litre bags; up to 15kg for 60 litre bags)
- Make sure that rubbish bags are placed out at the correct time on the correct days (see the Business Collection Days page)
- Consider those using the footpath when putting items out for collection – place your rubbish bag/s on the kerbside in front of your business without blocking the footpath or pedestrian access ways.
Recycling
All North Shore businesses are eligible for a recycling wheelie bin for a fortnightly recycling collection of 'domestic-type' materials such as glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel cans, and plastic containers marked with any of the recycling symbols 1-7.
North Shore City Council is responsible for collecting only 'domestic-type' recycling that results from a business’ kitchen or lunch room – not commercial quantities.
Make sure that your recycling wheelie bin is placed out at the correct time on the correct days (see the Business Collection Days page)
Items for your recycling wheelie bin:
- All plastic bottles and containers with the numbers 1 to 7 in the recycling triangle can be put out for recycling. This includes soft drink bottles and milk bottles, ice cream containers and lids, margarine containers, yoghurt pottles, dip containers and takeaway containers
- Glass bottles and jars (no broken or window glass and no mirrors)
- Aluminium and steel cans
- Aerosol containers (remove plastic top)
Where possible, items should be washed and squashed so that more can fit in your recycling wheelie bin.
Paper and cardboard recycling
Paper and cardboard can be recycled, but it does not go into your recycling wheelie bin.
Bundle paper and cardboard securely with string, place in a box or clear plastic bag, and put it out for collection. All paper or cardboard must be secured so that it doesn’t become wind blown litter. If putting cardboard boxes out for collection; please ensure they are flattened.
Shredded paper, office paper and non-wax or plastic-free covered paper is accepted in the collection but Tetra Pak cartons, pizza boxes or any paper or cardboard contaminated by food will not be collected.
Council’s recycling service for businesses
Each business must apply for a recycling wheelie bin if they wish to use council’s recycling service. Bins will only be delivered to those businesses that apply. Bins will be collected fortnightly on the normal collection day for the area.
