This licence authorises the holder to sell or supply liquor on premises or conveyances. Liquor cannot be removed from these premises or conveyances. There must be a person with a current manager's certificate on duty at all times when liquor is being sold or supplied to the public.
On-licence for a premises
With a complete application, that includes all supporting documents, the processing timeframe is approximately 20 working days.
- The fee for an on licence is $793.24.
- The fee for a BYO on licence is $134.94.
- Before you apply for your on licence you will need to obtain building and planning certificates of compliance and provide the following:
A scale plan showing:
- a) those parts of the premises to be used for the sale or supply of liquor, and
- b) those part of the premises (if any) that you designate as restricted – (no under 18’s admitted); or supervised areas – (under 18’s admitted if accompanied by parent or legal guardian)
- c) each entrance to the premises that you designate as a principal entrance.
- If you are not the owner of the premises, a written statement from the owner to the effect that there is no objection to the grant of the licence.
- A map showing the location of the premises, can be a photocopy of a street map indicating where the site is located.
- A photograph of the exterior of the premises; (or an artist’s impressions of the exterior of the proposed premises as they will look when completed)
- A sample menu presently in use (or proposed to be used should the premises become licensed).
- Certificate of Incorporation if the applicant is a company.
- Host Responsibility Policy.
Public notices
- You must give public notice of the application, in the prescribed form (Form 1), within 20 working days after filing the application. Please place the notice in the public notice section of your local paper i.e. North Shore Times Advertiser / North Harbour News or the New Zealand Herald
- Copies of the published public notice(s) and dates must be forwarded to the North Shore District Licensing Agency, as soon as possible.
- Within 10 working days after filing this application with the District Licensing Agency, the applicant must ensure that notice of the application in form 1A is attached in a conspicuous place on or adjacent to the site to which the application relates (unless the Secretary of the District Licensing Agency) agrees that it is impracticable or unreasonable to do so).

As part of the transition to the new Auckland Council, some regulatory forms are being standardised. Prior to 1 November 2010 this/these form(s) can be used at any local government organisation in the Auckland area.
Certificates of compliance (for premises only)
These certificates are required to be lodged with your liquor licence application. The certificates confirm that your premises and the use of your premises does not conflict with the North Shore District Plan and the Building Act 2004. Planning Certificate under the Resource Management Act 1991
- Fee is $375
- Takes approximately 20 working days to process.
- Applications should include all necessary information, particularly existing Resource Consents and Planning Certificates (if there are any), planned usage of floor areas for the ALL buildings on site, proposed or existing opening hours and max number of occupants (for all restaurant /cafes/bars). Scaled site plans must also be provided. The site plans must demonstrate the car parking provided for each activity on site.
Building Code Certificate
This compliance certificate is required to ensure that the premises complies with the Building Code.
On-licence for a conveyance
- The fee for an on licence for a conveyance is $793.24. This must be paid at the time of application and is not refundable
- The processing timeframe is approximately 20 working days
- You will need to supply with your application (as relevant) a current:
- Safe Ship Management Certificate (sea vessels)
- Airworthiness Certificate (aeroplanes)
- Warrant of Fitness (vehicles)
- If you do not own the conveyance, the owner's consent must be included with the application
- A layout plan of the conveyance must be included with the application
- This licence is initially renewable after one year then every three years after that.
