Information for honey sellers at North Shore markets
Licensing and control of the honey making industry
Licensing and controls of the honey making industry are needed to ensure that products are safe and standards are maintained.
The Council requires that you seek evidence from your honey supplier that the honey complies with the Food (Tutin in Honey) Standard 2008. This standard can be found on the New Zealand Food Safety Authority’s website (PDF 98KB).
Please note that you are required to hold a Food Stall Licence when you sell honey at the North Shore City Market as it is a food product.
The Food Stall Licence comes at no charge – as long as you can prove with a Certificate that your product has come from a managed premise. Please contact the council on (09) 486 8400 ext. 8296 to make arrangements to get a Food Stall Licence.
Before we issue you with such a licence, we require that you prove your produce has been packed in an approved premise. Your product is required to be packed either in a licensed premise under [1] the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974 or [2] with a Risk Management Programme [RMP].
The council manages the Food Stall Licence and the licensing of any packing/processing premise under the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974. Please note, if the honey processing or packing house is outside North Shore City you will need to contact the relevant local authority for that location.
If the sourced product does not come from a premise that is licensed by council then the packing/processing honey plant must have a Risk Management Programme. The New Zealand Food Safety authority manages this; please contact:
