North Shore City Council has a variety of projects and programmes aimed at enhancing our unique natural environment. Every year, thousands of native plants and trees are planted: in our parks and reserves, alongside our streams and ponds, and on private properties; with the common aim of restoring North Shore’s natural environment.
The map (click the map to enlarge) provides an overview of recent restoration plantings and the project or programme under which the planting took place. More information is provided below.

Parks Community Planting Days
Our season of community planting days runs from May to September each year, to improve our city’s parks and natural environment. Planting natives helps to fight weeds, minimise erosion, and provide habitat and food for native birds and other wildlife. For more information visit Community Planting Days or contact the Citywide Parks Officer.
Parks Volunteer Groups
Volunteers in our many volunteers groups, work to maintain and develop our parks and reserves. For more information visit Get Involved or contact the Citywide Parks Officer.
Schools Planting Programme
This programme supports local schools which have a stream on or bordering their grounds and which want to undertake riparian restoration or biodiversity enhancement activities. Further information is available from the Environmental Programmes Coordinator.
Stormwater Capital Projects
We’re maintaining and upgrading our public stormwater system, constructing new stormwater infrastructure, and improving the quality of stormwater flowing to our streams and beaches. For more information visit Stormwater Management.
Stream Restoration Pilot Projects
We have embarked on a long-term programme to enhance streams and creeks in parks and backyards. Natural streams are a better and cheaper way of managing stormwater - they also improve the look and feel of our neighbourhoods. For more information visit Stream Restoration in North Shore City or contact the Environmental Programmes Coordinator.
Streamside Assistance Programme
This programme helps residents who have or border a stream to improve natural habitats on their private property and attract native fish and birds back into our urban areas. The emphasis is on planting natives and controlling pest species. For more information visit Streamside Assistance Programme or contact the Environmental Programmes Coordinator.
Wai Care
Wai Care is a water quality monitoring, education and action programme. People are resourced and supported to learn about water quality, monitor the health of their local streams and take action to improve and restore them. For more information visit Wai Care in North Shore City or contact the Wai Care Facilitator.
