Enhance and protect our natural environment
Does your property have or border a stream? Would you like to:
- enhance the natural environment around the stream by removing and controlling weeds, and planting suitable native trees and shrubs?
- help protect the stream from the effects of erosion and flooding with appropriate planting?
- attract more native wildlife to your stream environment?
If so, then our Streamside Assistance Programme may be able to help.
Nature is all around us, even in our cities and it's worth protecting. The Streamside Assistance Programme, which is delivered on our behalf by the Kaipatiki Project, provides eligible residents with:
- A free on-site garden consultation from an expert advisor
- Comprehensive information about the best site-specific natives to plant
- Weed and pest eradication information, along with a small amount of weed control gel
- Free native plants
- A free, one-off garden waste collection.
The programme helps residents who have or border a stream to improve natural habitats on their private property and attract native fish and birds back into our urban areas. In this way, we can help to enhance and protect North Shore's unique environment.
With an emphasis on planting natives and controlling pest species to enhance native biodiversity, it will help you to create a backyard that is peaceful and relaxing while improving nature in our neighbourhoods and quality of life in our city.
Controlling weeds and pests ensures that native plants can thrive, encouraging native birds and animals into the area.
