The council has sister city links with Qingdao in China’s Shandong Province and Taichung - the third largest city on Taiwan Island.
Our relationship with Qingdao was established August 2008 and our relationship with Taichung was created December 2006.
We also have friendship agreements with Pohang in South Korea, Nadi in Fiji and with Sichuan Province in China.
The Pohang friendship agreement was signed in 2008 and the Nadi and Sichuan Province agreements in 2006.
What are sister cities?
Sister cities are a pair of cities that agree to establish economic, cultural, civic and educational links with each other. The aim is to foster international understanding and friendship, to encourage exchange of education, culture and sport and to promote, where possible, trade.
Of particular note is our successful relationship with Taichung in Taiwan. Currently, the North Shore is growing its exports to Taiwan. Furthermore, investment in North Shore by Taiwanese business interests is increasing despite the current economic climate.
