Sustainable living is about making small changes to how we live day to day. These changes can add up to a much better quality of life and healthier environment for all of us. Small actions can have long term impacts on people and the environment and lead to great changes in our communities.
North Shore City Council supports the national Sustainable Living Programme. The website provides detailed information on waste, water, energy, housing, gardening and shopping to support you to create a healthier home, save money on bills and sustain the environment.
The Sustainable Living Trust has developed quick reference booklets to help you get started and can be accessed under ‘Related documents’ on the right-hand side of this page.
Our Naturally Smarter programme celebrates local people and their choices.
North Shore Home and Garden Show
In April 2009, we focused on Naturally Smarter gardeners at the North Shore Home and Garden Show.
A group of council staff and local gardeners collaborated to develop a garden that contributes to a healthier, more vibrant and productive North Shore.
Organic gardeners were on hand to talk to people all weekend about the garden and its features such as:
- Heirloom chooks in a permaculture chook dome
- Vegetables herbs and flowers to grow for winter
- Brews and teas to keep your garden healthy
- Fruit trees that grow well on the North Shore
- Garden materials that have less impact on the environment - macrocarpa, natural fertilisers, living mulch, organic seedlings
There was information about on local workshops, gardens to visit, organic gardening advisors and suppliers to support people to get started right way.
You can find further information on our garden on the Naturally Smarter website under ‘Gardening'.
