The Enviroschools programme is about learning and action for a sustainable future. It is a national programme led by the Enviroschools Foundation in partnership with schools, councils and other organisations.
Currently over 600 schools (25% of all New Zealand schools) are part of the Enviroschools network.
Schools that participate in the programme have make a commitment to developing environmental education and action in their school. Staff and students are assisted by an Enviroschools Facilitator to investigate their school surroundings, develop a plan and take action. The Facilitator can link schools to experts, help them find ways to resource projects and to find their own creative solutions.
Enviroschools focus on developing empowered students and sustainable communities. Other guiding principles are: respect for diversity of people and cultures, Maori perspectives and learning for sustainability.
North Shore City Council supports local schools to participate in the programme through facilitation, workshops, special projects and practical resource, the Enviroschools Kit and handbook.
