We recognise the need to educate our future generation. We have developed some specific programmes, but are also available on request to talk with students of all ages about pollution issues. We can tailor our talk to suit your needs. If you would like a member of the team to visit your school/class/group, please contact Actionline, phone (09) 486 8600 and ask to speak to a Pollution Prevention Officer.
Primary school
The Tina and Tane Show
The Tina and Tane Show is based on two virtual comic book characters that come to life using music, dance and comedy to teach primary school children (Years 3 - 6) about urban environments, water quality and health. This now incorporates elements of The Great Drain Game so students can learn the difference between outside (stormwater) and inside (wastewater) drains.
Some of the key messages include:
- Outside drains should only drain rain
- Outside drains drain untreated water to streams and the sea
- Sometimes pollutants make the water unsafe for swimming
- Understand the difference between inside and outside drains
- Don’t swim for 24 hours after heavy rain at North Shore City beaches
To support the Tina and Tane show in the classroom we have developed a teachers' resource pack that is supplied to each teacher. There is a lot of general information and great activities in the pack. You can download the pack right here, right now!
The Auckland Regional Council also supplies the City Issues resource pack, which has a section on stormwater education.
Drain painting and stencilling
We encourage primary schools to raise awareness within their school environment by painting creative messages around their stormwater drains reminding everyone that outside drains only drain rain. This photo (right) comes from Kauri Park School where a group of extension art students helped design and paint these messages.
A stencil with the message “tip no waste, drains to stream” is also available to borrow.
Intermediate and Secondary Schools
Not only do we offer tailored talks to classes but there is also the opportunity in to learn more about how your schools stormwater drains connect through to your local stream and beach. To find out more please call Actionline on (09) 486 8600 and ask to speak to a Pollution Prevention Officer.
