The Mayoral Youth Fund

North Shore youth initiatives will benefit from more than $17,000 funding, through Mayoral Youth Fund grants. There were twelve successful groups selected for the funding from 25 applications, with great variety in the types of youth projects and services represented.

Money for the grants was raised at the Mayoral Cup Charity Golf Tournament, held in February 2009. More than 60 participants joined Mayor Williams and the Korean Society of New Zealand for the annual fundraising event, with a great many local companies and organisations generously donating funds and items to be auctioned.

Touch Compass Dance Trust	8 – 20 years	To fund an integrated dance project, run in schools, for 16 North Shore young disabled and non-disabled people	$3000

Criteria for the Mayoral Youth Fund

The project:

Is generated by young people and they have a strong role in planning and making the decisions
Is supported by adults to coach, mentor and assist young people to learn new skills and knowledge, and develop leadership
Is designed to limit the barriers to participation – e.g. transport and affordability is addressed
Brings young people together with the aim of breaking down stereotypes, creating connections and local pride
Involves young people in enjoying and celebrating our community and environment
Provides innovative/unique opportunities
Fosters talent by giving local young people the opportunity to develop to a higher level of expertise (with the aim for acquired knowledge to be shared with other young people)
Showcases local youth talent and contribution
Encourages groups to work collaboratively to achieve a common goal
Provides opportunities that are open to the diverse population of young people
