Highbury Community House

Meet Jacquie Jarry, manager of Highbury Community House. 110 Hinemoa St, Birkenhead

From the moment you enter this hive of activity, you instantly feel warm and welcomed. Mothers pushing littlies on a barrel swing, senior citizens gathering for garden circle, everywhere you turn you feel an overwhelming sense of community. "It’s all about a home away from home, people can come here and feel safe," says Jacquie.

Jacquie has run Highbury House since September 2006 and boasts that this house in particular has a personal touch. Her desk is positioned so she can greet every single person who steps into the house, while maintaining her office routines and duties at the same time.

Jacquie has felt nothing but a warm welcome and sense of community since she arrived at the house. She works closely with the crèche and after school care teachers, committee members and activity volunteers, who all run together as a highly productive and fun team. "It is a place where strong friendships and community ties are formed, a place for all the family," she says proudly.

This community house features activities available for all the community and includes a busy crèche, the focal point of the house.

The indoor/outdoor crèche hosts an adventurous playground with, art, dress ups and book areas. Mum’s can be assured their children are having an wonderful adventure when they drop them off, to attend the various house activities such as group walking, patchwork and sewing, writers group, yoga, even scrabble, available to them.

The house entertains approximately 200 guests a week who attend groups and classes and that doesn’t account for the daily crèche numbers. The local plunket nurse also holds consultations in the house for young mothers and babies.

Other private groups meet in the community house meeting rooms which are rented weekly for their various clubs and hobbies.

Highbury House welcomes any new community members to pass by and see what the house has the offer them.
